ARC Healthy Living Centre Emotional Intelligence development case study

ARC HLC Case Study

The ARC Healthy Living Centre is a multi-functional, charitable organisation delivering health and social care over an extensive rural geography. Their primary focus is reducing health inequality working to the Marmot principles. ARC employs more than 60 people across a range of health and social care services.

Following an organisational review and restructure, ARC HLC engaged the services of Julie Allen Consulting at the end of 2021 to strengthen leadership capability, with a particular focus on emotional intelligence.

A total of 13 managers/Board members completed Thomas International’s Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue) and participated in a 90-minute feedback session to explore their strengths and development areas. Each individual then took part in three one-to-one coaching sessions, as well as two group workshops, to support their personal development journey.

In 2024, eight of these managers completed a follow-up TEIQue assessment and feedback session to reflect on their progress. A comparison of the 2022 and 2024 results showed significant improvements in the specific areas each individual had targeted through coaching.

Outcomes for ARC HLC

As a result of the programme, ARC HLC has experienced a number of positive organisational shifts:

  • Greater insight into behaviours and emotional responses.
  • Enhanced collective problem-solving, shifting from an “I can fix it” mindset to a “Why is it broken?” culture.
  • A more strategic, less operational, approach among the management team.
  • A psychologically safer environment, with increased openness and willingness to discuss uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.
