Leading Virtual Teams in a Pandemic

This pandemic has tested every leader globally.  The concept of leading in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambitious (VUCA) world has gained more relevance in the last 8 weeks than ever before.

A large proportion of the workforce are currently working from home and this may continue to be the norm.

While adjusting to this new world was rapid and acute for most employees it also created additional pressure for those leading organisations / teams through these uncertain times, and in this new way of interacting.

Creating psychological safety in teams is vital in this virtual world of working.

In a team with high psychological safety:

  • Team members feel safe to take risks around their team members.
  • They feel confident that no one on the team will embarrass or punish anyone else for admitting a mistake, asking a question, or offering a new idea.

The ProSocial Matrix, created by Dr. Kevin polk presents a framework to consider the helpful behaviours required by leaders to fulfil the shared purpose.

Below is an example of considering a what is important in being lead in a virtual working environment.
