Living a Values Driven Life: A Guide to Purpose and Fulfilment

World Values Day is a global campaign held annually to raise awareness and promote the practice of values around the world. This year, it falls on Thursday, 17th October, with the theme: Bringing Values to Life.

What Are Values and Why Are They Important?

Values are the essence of who we are. They represent what matters most to us, driving our decisions and actions. They ignite the passion within us and give purpose to everything we do. World Values Day encourages us to reflect on our core values and, more importantly, to action them.

Values serve as our moral compass, guiding us along the right path. By living out these—whether as individuals, families, groups, organisations, or communities—we can rise above the negativity and divisions that often surround us. By doing so, we contribute to creating a more harmonious and positive world.

How Do Values Impact Our Lives?

When our actions align with our values, we not only transform ourselves but also positively influence those around us. This ripple effect can create meaningful changes in society, starting with just one small step.

Do You Know What Your Values Are?

Everyone has a set of values, though we may not always be fully aware of them. A helpful way to uncover your core values is by reflecting on the key people in your life and thinking about what matters most in your relationships with them.

Ask yourself: How would I like to be described—as a parent, partner, leader, or colleague? This reflection can help clarify the values that are most important to you.

Bringing Your Values to Life

This year’s theme, Bringing Values to Life, emphasises how living in alignment with your values can improve your well-being and overall life satisfaction. Once you’ve identified your values, consider how to incorporate them into your daily actions. What specific steps can you take each day to live out your values and create a greater sense of purpose?

Reflect on the list you made when thinking about how you want to be perceived in various aspects of your life. Is this how others currently see you? If not, what changes can you make to ensure your actions better reflect your values?

In short, understanding what truly matters to you and acting on it leads to a more meaningful and fulfilling life.
