Supporting Employee Psychological Wellbeing

Helping individuals or groups to live a rich, full and meaningful life by improving their psychological flexibility.

“It’s a well-known fact nowadays that a healthy workforce in a healthy workplace also means a healthy business.”

— World Health Organisation

Psychological Wellbeing at Work: Safeguarding Your Most Important Asset

According to Gallup's 2024 State of the Global Workplace report, stress, anger, sadness, and loneliness are now the most frequently experienced emotions among employees and the McKinsey Health Institute estimates that 22% of the global workforce is experiencing burnout.

Findings from the CIPD Health and Wellbeing Report 2023 revealed that the sickness absence rate was the highest in over a decade, with employees taking an average of 7.8 days off per year—a significant increase from 5.8 days in 2019.

This paints a clear picture of the need for businesses to prioritise mental well-being in the workplace.

The cost of poor well-being to employers

Neglecting psychological well-being can have serious consequences for businesses, including:

Absenteeism: Mental health issues are a leading cause of workplace absences, reducing employee availability and productivity.

Accidents and Injuries: Employees under high levels of stress are more likely to make mistakes, leading to increased accidents and injuries.

Lack of Job Commitment: Low morale and emotional exhaustion can result in disengagement and decreased loyalty to the organisation.

Burnout: Continuous stress without support can lead to burnout, affecting both individual performance and team dynamics.

Workplace Conflict: Mental strain often manifests as interpersonal conflicts, which can disrupt teams and undermine company culture.

Decreased Productivity and Quality: Stress, anxiety, and burnout lead to a decline in focus, productivity, and the overall quality of work.

How much is it costing your business?

Unaddressed mental health challenges can significantly impact the bottom line. From lost workdays to diminished employee engagement, the financial toll can be substantial. Employers who invest in the mental health and well-being of their staff can not only reduce these costs but also foster a healthier, more productive work environment.

Now is the time to review your workplace well-being initiatives. Consider offering mental health resources, promoting work-life balance, and fostering a culture of openness and support. Investing in your employees’ well-being is not just good for them—it's good for business.
